Deal with unusable and undeletable previous versions of file history - Microsoft Community

due some irregular operations, deleting file history dir directly, there some unusable , undeletable previous versions left.  when choose them in the previous versions tab in file property dialog open  , restore button in grey.

if use restore entry in context menu, error prompt error code of 0x81000036 will arise.  very torturous have strong appreciation of tidy, me. search several search engines, try out lot of methods. it  cost me 3 hours, results still remain same.  search key words in registry , c volume, try find clue, failed, no meaningful results produced. realized those previous versions may hide in system volume information folder. after setting, open svi folder , find 2 suspicious folders, named windows backup windows xxxxxxbackups( x forgotten characters).

next,i start pc win 8 pe delete 2 folders. did not work when press del key on keyboard or choosed delete menu conext menu. got try delete them under linux or freedos. after making 5 or 6 booting usb disk linux system in , failure in starting pc,i found linux versions can not work uefi , gpt. wtf! 2 hours wasted.

a moment later,i recalled had not try delete folder del command , rmdir command under win 8 pe. did , worked. remember use del command /f opion. here are:

del  /f /s /q  "path\to\del"

rmdir /s /q  "path\to\del"

i have posted here save someone`s  precious time who plagued unusable , undeletable previous versions of file history. also, remember rule try most reachable , easy to implement solutions first.  if kept rule, save 2 hours precious time. if.
