[SOLVED] MsMpEng.exe (Windows Defender) continuously - Microsoft Community

since friday (oct 13, 2017), windows 10 computer spending lot of cpu msmpeng.exe (windows defender), without stop. using process explorer, see there 2 threads, each of them consuming 100% of 1 of 4 cores in intel core i5-5200u, had 2 cores busy. 1 of threads had "start address" = "!rtluserthreadstart" , other, "0x0" (i know these information not of use, although wanted put here have, because had searched lot , didn't find similar).

had done:

  • reboot machine (as finished starting up, msmpeng.exe started consuming cpu again);
  • checking msmpeng.exe in windows defender's exclusions

when writing answer, opened windows defender's exclusions again, list here exclusions set. i've realized had exclusions older versions of visual studio community , sql server express, not current ones (visual studio 2017 , sql server 2016). i've added .exe exclusions and, after rebooting, i finally have machine again!

i've written if else has same problem , doesn't find answer, please try same solution.

regards.

as i've said, i've posted answer else same problem can it.

what i've done solve it:

  • add "c:\program files (x86)\microsoft visual studio\2017\community\common7\ide\devenv.exe" windows defender's exclusions;
  • add "c:\program files\microsoft sql server\mssql13.sqlexpress\mssql\binn\sqlservr.exe" windows defender's exclusions;
  • reboot.

i had exclusions older versions of visual studio , sql server express, i've upgraded , forgot exclude newer versions.
