Windows 10 Unmountable Boot Volume Error Message And Automatic Repair - Microsoft Community


hi, seem having issue during start-up.

first: desktop pc powered off 16 hours, , when i 

had shut down, shut down @ time.

second: when turned on pc, windows 10 logo screen appeared

as do, circle of dots remained on an

extended period of time, , blue screen appeared saying

that "your pc ran problem, , needs restart". @ bottom

of screen stop code had said "unmountable boot volume".

then pc rebooted the windows 10 logo screen , the

circle of dots message saying "preparing automatic repair".

third: after screen disappeared, looked command

prompt window briefly flashed onto screen, , had seen

nothing black screen.

what know 1). in general how long should the

automatic repair mode running, , 2). causing the

unmountable boot volume. 

it has been suggested reading of posts within

the community, hd may @ fault, true?

for point of reference, have hp in 1 desktop pc

that purchased in 2011 win 7 installed.

and except issue optical disc drive

(cd-r, cd-rw, dvd, blu-ray) occurred in late 2015,

the pc has been functioning normally.

and point of reference.

just before expiration date free upgrade to

win 10, had installed win 10 on pc, , has also

been functioning normally, recent

win 10 creators update installed in mid-june of

this year.

if within community can tell me going

wrong pc, helpful, , greatly

appreciated.

"unmountable boot volume" error message occurs due variety of reasons. can due damaged file system , cannot mounted, or basic input/output system (bios) settings configured force faster udma modes. can occur if there problem in system hard drive or in partition windows installed. doesn't mean hard disk defective.

automatic repair should take 15 minutes max.

since you've mentioned can't reach lock screen able log in , proceed troubleshoot pc, let's create installation media , perform troubleshooting steps using tool.

can download installation media tool link. don't worry steps on how download can found on link.

after downloading it, can proceed these troubleshooting methods. make sure start pc using installation media.

method 1 - perform chkdsk.

  1. select repair computer option found @ lower-left corner once start pc using installation media.
  2. choose command prompt.
  3. type chkdsk /r c:, press enter key keyboard. note: replace c: bootable drive letter you're using if it's other c:.
  4. select y yes if asked regarding checking disk next time system restarts.
  5. reboot pc. let's keep our patience here chkdsk can take quiet time.

method 2 - repair master boot record.

  1. select repair computer option found @ lower-left corner once start pc using installation media.
  2. choose command prompt.
  3. type bootrec /fixboot, press enter key keyboard.
  4. reboot pc. patience needed here.

method 3 - automatic repair

  1. select repair computer option found @ lower-left corner once start pc using installation media.
  2. choose troubleshoot, advanced options.
  3. select automatic repair, next.

if these methods didn't work repair pc, seem have bad hard drive might need replacement. being said, can check manufacturer if reach point.
